With Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) suffering behind (sorry, I really didn't mean to make that pun), Nairo Quintana (Movistar) couldn't launch an attack. Dumoulin had waited for Quintana to rejoin the peloton after the /Colombian had crashed on a descent. Quintana's only hope was that those near him would attack and he could go with them. He was pleased when Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2r La Mondiale) attacked and then Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) in turned went. Quintana was forced to go with them, not that he wasn't willing to ride hard in defense of his second overall. That way, he could make it harder for Dumoulin to defend, but he wouldn't be held responsible for attacking the Maglia Rosa when it was in trouble.
