Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) had spent all day driving the pace of the break away, just to be able to sprint for the points towards his green jersey. He looked back to make sure the TV Moto wasn't going to block him and then jumped out of the pack of his break away companions. He was given chase by Julius Van Den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) as the Caja Rural-Seguros RGA rider just watched them go. With the big climbs of the day to come, no one was thinking that Groves would press on with this effort.
