Here it is the final painting of the final stage of the 101st Giro d'Italia. It has been almost as difficult for me to get here as it has for many of the riders. Like Giuseppe Fonzi (Wilier Triestina) I am arriving far later to the line than the rest of the race, or of those who have followed the daily progress of this most beautiful of stage races. It was Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) who punched the air in victory with the Coloseum as a carefully placed back drop. It appeares that Elia Viviani (Quickstep) saw that he was going to be beat at the line and just stopped pedaling. He still took second on the day holding more than enough points to go out the best sprinter in the Giro. Rounding out third is Jean-Pierre Drucker (BMC). Though it will be awhile before that finish their day, the top three on GC, Chris Froome, Tom Dumoulin, and Miguel Angel Lopez will hold their positions. Lopez also takes home the Maglia Bianca of best young rider. Chris Froome gets just a bit greedy taking both the Maglia Rosa of race leader and Maglia Azurro of best climber. Chapeau to all 155 racers who finished, and to the 21 who did not.
