The beard of the peloton, Simon Geschke (Cofidis) was mopping up all of the King of the Mountain Points on the first two climbs of the day. He won't be able to take over the lead in the competition unless he scores some points at the finish atop the Planches les Belles Filles. On his shoulder is two of the remaining break of five, Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-Victorious) and Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels-KTM). Teuns is hoping to repeat his victory atop the final mountain. Since the stage ends at the top of a climb, there are double KOM points on offer, so Geschke will need to place in the top three on the stage to claim the Maillot a Pois.
